Oil, Acrylic and Mixed Media Paintings - Large Postcard Reprints

Four of the seven paintings in this small collection explore the relationship between the Celtic knot and the landscape of the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, in particular the Pilgrim Posts which mark the safe path across the sands from the mainland. The remaining three, explore the aspects separately.

I have been interested in the art and purpose of the Celtic knot since discovering the definitive textbook on the creation of the Celtic knot, 'Celtic Art : the Methods of Construction' by George Bain and over the last few years I have tried to discover how to use it as a form of meditation and prayer, I have also explored ways of making the concept of the Celtic knot usable in a more organic and free way which allows it to powerfully symbolise the idea of journeying. The cord of three strands or plait, is probably the simplest knot and yet it can carry an amazing message.

A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.
Ecclesiastes 4:12. New Living Translation 2007

The three stranded cord not only reminds us that three people are stronger than one but it tells us about the different aspects of God, as Father, Son and Spirit and the strength which that relationship offers to humanity, without Jesus could we begin to relate to an omnipotent God? Without the Spirit could we hope to fulfil our potential? And without Jesus could we believe that God even cared about us? In the piece 'In All Things' the threefold cord makes a complete circle, symbolically this represents the infinity of God.

The Pilgrim Posts, for those not familiar with Lindisfarne, mark a safe route across the sands from the Mainland to the Island. At low tide modern pilgrims, visitors and residents can get to the Island via a driveable road but before that was built the journey could be hazardous as there are many areas of quicksand, markers were essential and have become a poignant reminder of the challenge of being a Pilgrim.
