Bible:
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Matthew 22:37
Serve one another humbly in love. Galatians 5:13
Love your neighbour as yourself. Matthew 22:39
Background:
Sanskrit has ninety-six words for love, ancient Greek had four key words and the English and Hebrew language have one each.
It can be helpful to think of love as having different ways of being, like jelly beans that are different colours but still retain the quality of a jelly bean, love, (to echo a popular quote) is love, is love.
The word love is used in the Bible with great power,
Jesus said, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
and “For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
The kind of love Jesus spoke about was completely unconditional, self-sacrificing and pure.
