Lindisfarne Scriptorium - Treasures for the Journey
Customer Type: Retail

This painting was created by Mary's Father-in-Law - Michael S. Fleeson. It is of Lindisfarne Priory and the Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin.

The Church of St. Mary the Virgin is the oldest building on Holy Island and the only building that retains work from the Saxon period.

On the outside of the building looking towards the west you can see quoin stones from the Saxon period where the nave joins the chancel. Some of these stones may be from the church that was built around St Aidan's wooden church.

The Norman extending work in the church was done in the twelfth century, probably about the same time as the Priory was built. The Priory church was again extended in the thirteenth century and the parish church had its present chancel and south aisle added.
