Words:

For so greatly did God love the world that He gave His only Son, that every one who trusts in Him may not perish but may have the Life of Ages.
John 3:16 Weymouth New Testament

Background:

The words of John are as familiar and loved to many as an old pair of slippers and yet when we read them in a different translation they start to sparkle again like new patent leather 'best' shoes! I particularly like the emphasis of 'so greatly did God love' and the idea of having 'the Life of Ages'.

In this piece I have tried to convey something of the freshness of the words in this translation by showing how they not only lift our spirit by their reassurance but how the promise within them releases us to bless each other as we are blessed.

The life flowing from the sacrifice of the cross, lifting the figure towards eternity with our Creator, is also symbolic of the sacrifice of dying to self. Giving up the need for the apparent stability of the world and the security of possessions, demonstrates how then we can be a more effective conduit for God's blessings towards others. That isn't to suggest that we should all throw off our clothes and sell our houses, what we need to release is the reliance on these things if they have become our reason for living. If they are more important than God in our lives then they will colour our perception of everything including where we allow ourselves to share God's blessings.

As Matthew in Ch10 v8 said 'Freely you have received, freely give'. Without the drive to impress others by our achievements, connections and possessions we are freed to give our love, blessing and time to those who God leads us to, we remove our own filters about who is deserving or worthy and reach out to those outside our normal comfort zone.
